Algebra, chapter II, § 11. Graded modules and rings

Let Δ\Delta be a torsion-free commutative group and AA a graded ring of type Δ\Delta. If the product in AA of two homogeneous elements ≠0\neq 0 is ≠0\neq 0, the ring AA has no divisor of 0.

Let Δ\Delta be given a total ordering compatible with its group structure (Lemma

1) and let x=∑λ∈Δxλ,y=∑λ∈Δyλx = \sum_{\lambda \in \Delta} x_\lambda, y = \sum_{\lambda \in \Delta} y_\lambda be two non-zero elements of AA (xλx_\lambda and yλy_\lambda being homogeneous of degree λ\lambda for all λ∈Δ\lambda \in \Delta); let α\alpha (resp. β\beta) be the greatest of the elements λ∈Δ\lambda \in \Delta such that xλ≠0x_\lambda \neq 0 (resp. yλ≠0y_\lambda \neq 0); it is immediate that if λ≠α\lambda \neq \alpha or μ≠β\mu \neq \beta, either xλyμ=0x_\lambda y_\mu = 0 or deg⁡(xλyμ)<α+β\deg(x_\lambda y_\mu) < \alpha + \beta; the homogeneous component of xyxy of degree α+β\alpha + \beta is therefore xαyβx_\alpha y_\beta, which is non-zero by hypothesis; whence xy≠0xy \neq 0.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
