Algebra, chapter IV, § 6. Symmetric functions

Suppose that p≥qp \geq q, and let h∈A[X]h \in A[X] be a polynomial of degree ≤p−q\leq p - q. Let us show that

res⁡p,q(f,g)=res⁡p,q(f+gh,g). \operatorname{res}_{p,q}(f, g) = \operatorname{res}_{p,q}(f + gh, g) .
(29) For if we write ω(u,v)=(u,uh+v)\omega(u, v) = (u, uh + v) for (u,v)∈Sq×Sp(u, v) \in S_q \times S_p, then ww is an automorphism of the AA-module Sq×SpS_q \times S_p and we have
ω−1(u,v)=(u,−uh+v). \omega^{-1}(u, v) = (u, -uh + v) .
The matrix of ww with respect to the basis B1B_1 is lower triangular and its diagonal elements are equal to 11. On the other hand, φ∘w\varphi \circ w maps (u,v)(u, v) to u(f+gh)+vgu(f + gh) + vg. Now formula (29) means that the matrices representing φ\varphi and φ∘w\varphi \circ w have the same determinant and this follows from the relation det⁡w=1\det w = 1.

Assume that ff is monic of degree pp; put E=A[X]/(f)E = A[X]/(f) and denote by xx the canonical image of XX in EE. We know (IV, p. 11) that EE is a free AA-module with basis (1,x,…,xp−1)(1, x, \ldots, x^{p-1}). We can thus define the norm NE/A(u)N_{E/A}(u) of any element uu of EE (III, p. 543, Def. 2).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
