Algebra, chapter V, § 1. Prime fields. Characteristic

— Let AA be a commutative ring of characteristic pp. The mapping a↦apa \mapsto a^p is an endomorphism of the ring AA, that is, we have the relations

(1)

(a+b)p=ap+bp(a + b)^p = a^p + b^p
(2)
(ab)p=apbp(ab)^p = a^p b^p

for a,ba, b in AA.

Formula (2) follows from the commutativity of AA. To prove (1) we use the binomial formula (a+b)p=ap+bp+∑i=1p−1(pi)⋅aibp−i(a + b)^p = a^p + b^p + \sum_{i=1}^{p-1} \binom{p}{i} \cdot a^i b^{p-i}; since p⋅x=0p \cdot x = 0 for all x∈Ax \in A, it suffices to prove the following lemma:

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
