Algebra, V, p. 73, § 10. Galois extensions
*Let , then for to form a basis of the -module it is necessary and sufficient that .
Since and have the same dimension over , to say that is a basis of over means that the mapping of into is injective. This in turn means that the mapping of into is injective (II, p. 306, Prop. 14). Now there is an -module isomorphism of onto which maps to . It follows that is a basis of over if and only if, for every non-zero family of elements , of we have . But this last relation means that there exists such that , whence the proposition.
\* A) Suppose that is infinite; the mapping of into is a polynomial mapping over (IV, p. 54). By extension of scalars from to we get a corresponding mapping for the vector -space and we have just seen that the latter is not identically zero (because is free of rank 1 over ). So there exists such that (IV, p. 18, Th. 2); more generally, from the same reference we have:
Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
