Algebra, chapter V, § 11. Abelian extensions

— *Let E be a cyclic extension of K and let a be a generator of the Galois group Γ\Gamma of E over K.

a) For an element x∈Ex \in E to satisfy NE/K(x)=1N_{E/K}(x) = 1 it is necessary and sufficient that y∈E∗y \in E^* exist such that x=y/σ(y)x = y / \sigma(y); every y1∈E∗y_1 \in E^* with x=y1/σ(y1)x = y_1 / \sigma(y_1) is then of the form λy\lambda y where λ∈K∗\lambda \in K^*.

b) For an element x∈Ex \in E to satisfy TrE/K(x)=0\mathrm{Tr}_{E/K}(x) = 0 it is necessary and sufficient that z∈Ez \in E exist with x=z−σ(z)x = z - \sigma(z); then every z1∈Ez_1 \in E with x=z1−σ(z1)x = z_1 - \sigma(z_1) is of the form z+μz + \mu, where μ∈K\mu \in K.

Let us first prove a lemma.*

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
