Algebra, chapter V, § 14. Transcendental extensions

— Let Ω\Omega be an algebraically closed extension of a field KK, EE and FF two subextensions of Ω\Omega and uu a KK-isomorphism of EE onto FF. For a KK-automorphism vv of OO to exist which extends uu, it is necessary and sufficient for Ω\Omega to have the same transcendence degree over EE and FF.

The condition is clearly necessary.

Suppose then that Ω\Omega has the same transcendence degree over EE and FF and let us choose a transcendence basis BB of Ω\Omega over EE and a transcendence basis CC of Ω\Omega over FF. Since BB and CC are equipotent, Prop. 2 (VV, p. 106) shows that uu extends to a KK-isomorphism u′u' of E(B)E(B) onto F(C)F(C). Since C?C? is an algebraic closure of E(B)E(B) and F(C)F(C), the Cor. of VV, p. 23 shows that u′u' extends to an automorphism vv of Ω\Omega.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
