Algebra, chapter VI, § 1. Ordered groups. Divisibility

— In an ordered group G, let (pi)i∈I(p_i)_{i \in I} be a family of pairwise distinct positive elements of G satisfying condition (P) (and hence irreducible). Then the map

(ni)i∈I↦∑i∈Inipi (n_i)_{i \in I} \mapsto \sum_{i \in I} n_i p_i

is an isomorphism of the ordered group Z(I)\mathbf{Z}^{(I)}, the direct sum of the ordered groups ZZ (VI, p. 7) onto the ordered subgroup of GG generated by the pιp_\iota.

It is enough to show that the relation ∑ι∈Inιpι≥0\sum_{\iota \in I} n_\iota p_\iota \geq 0 is equivalent to nι≥0n_\iota \geq 0 for all ι\iota, for in particular the relation ∑ι∈Inιpι=0\sum_{\iota \in I} n_\iota p_\iota = 0 will imply nι=0n_\iota = 0 for all ι\iota, hence this will show that the family (pι)(p_\iota) is linearly independent. Now let I′I' (resp. I′′I'') be the finite subset of II consisting of those ι\iota such that nι>0n_\iota > 0 (resp. nι<0n_\iota < 0) ; we have

∑ι∈I′nιpι≥∑ι∈I′′(−nι)pι. \sum_{\iota \in I'} n_\iota p_\iota \geq \sum_{\iota \in I''} (-n_\iota)p_\iota .

In particular, for λ∈I′′\lambda \in I'', this implies that pλ≤∑ι∈I′nιpιp_\lambda \leq \sum_{\iota \in I'} n_\iota p_\iota, and it follows by induction from property (P) that we must have pλ≤pιp_\lambda \leq p_\iota for some ι∈I′\iota \in I'; since pιp_\iota is irreducible, this would imply pλ=pιp_\lambda = p_\iota, which is absurd. Hence I′I' is empty, which proves the proposition.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
