Algebra, chapter VI, § 2. Ordered fields

— Let KK be an ordered field and let f∈K[X]f \in K[X]. There exists an interval in KK, in the complement of which ff takes the same sign as its highest degree term.

We can immediately reduce ourselves to the case of a monic polynomial; then one can write f(x)=xn(1+a1x−1+…+anx−n)f(x) = x^n(1 + a_1 x^{-1} + \ldots + a_n x^{-n}) for x≠0x \neq 0. Let

M=sup⁡(1,∣a1∣+⋯+∣an∣). M = \sup (1, |a_1| + \cdots + |a_n|).

For ∣x∣>M|x| > M we have 1+a1x−1+…+anx−n>01 + a_1 x^{-1} + \ldots + a_n x^{-n} > 0, which completes the proof of the proposition.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
