Algebra, chapter VII, § 5. Endomorphisms of vector spaces

Let uu be an endomorphism of a vector space EE over a commutative field KK; for each scalar aa, let VaV_a be the eigenspace corresponding to aa. Then the subspaces VaV_a are closed under uu and the sum of the VaV_a is direct.

The first assertion is clear. By definition the subspace VaV_a is annihilated by the element X−aX - a of K[X]K[X]; the X−a,a∈KX - a, a \in K, are irreducible and pairwise non-associate; the second assertion thus follows from VII, p. 8, Th. 1.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
