Algebra, chapter VII, § 5. Endomorphisms of vector spaces

— Let EE be a vector space of finite dimension nn over a commutative field KK, and let uu be an endomorphism of EE. Then EE is the direct sum of subspaces EkE_k, closed under uu and cyclic with respect to uu, such that the minimal polynomial of the restriction of uu to EkE_k has the form pkn(k)p_k^{n(k)}, where pkp_k is an irreducible polynomial, and EkE_k cannot be expressed as a direct sum of two nonzero subspaces each closed under uu. For every monic irreducible polynomial p∈K[X]p \in K[X] and every integer n≥1n \geq 1, the number m(pn)m(p^n) of subspaces EkE_k in any such decomposition, such that pnp^n is the minimal polynomial of the restriction of uu to EkE_k, is uniquely determined.

The pkn(k)p_k^{n(k)} determine the similarity invariants of uu and vice versa; we can get from one to the other by the procedure explained in VII, p. 25, Remarks 2 and 3. Furthermore, we can immediately get from the decomposition considered in Prop. 6 to those considered in Prop. 3 and 4.

Note that the monic irreducible polynomials p∈K[X]p \in K[X] such that m(pn)>0m(p^n) > 0 for some integer n≥1n \geq 1 are precisely the monic irreducible factors of the minimal polynomial of uu. Thus, in contrast to the similarity invariants, these polynomials depend in general on the field KK in which we are working.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
