Algebra, chapter VII, § 5. Endomorphisms of vector spaces

Let EE be a vector space of finite dimension nn over a commutative field KK, and let uu be an endomorphism of EE; for every monic irreducible polynomial p(X)p(X), let MpM_p be the vector subspace consisting of elements xx of EE such that (p(u))k⋅x=0(p(u))^k \cdot x = 0 for some integer kk. Then MpM_p is closed under uu, the vector space EE is the direct sum of the MpM_p, and there exist polynomials sps_p such that, for all x∈Ex \in E, the component of xx in MpM_p is equal to sp(u)⋅xs_p(u) \cdot x.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
