Algebra, chapter VII, § 5. Endomorphisms of vector spaces

— Let Y be an indeterminate and let u~\tilde{u} denote the endomorphism of the K(Y)K(Y)-vector space K(Y)⊗KEK(Y) \otimes_K E induced from uu by extension of scalars from KK to the field K(Y)K(Y) of rational functions in YY with coefficients from KK. Then the endomorphism Y⋅1−u~Y \cdot 1 - \tilde{u} is invertible. Moreover, if χu′\chi_u' denotes the derivative of the polynomial χu\chi_u, then

Tr⁡((Y⋅1−u~)−1)=χu′(Y)/χu(Y). \operatorname{Tr}((Y \cdot 1 - \tilde{u})^{-1}) = \chi_u'(Y)/\chi_u(Y) .

The endomorphism Y⋅1−u~Y \cdot 1 - \tilde{u} is invertible because its determinant is the nonzero element χu(Y)\chi_u(Y) of K(Y)K(Y). It follows that u~\tilde{u} is substitutable in the rational function r(X)=(Y−X)−1r(X) = (Y - X)^{-1} in K(Y)(X)K(Y)(X). The second assertion now follows from Cor. 2, by the relation

χu′(Y)/χu(Y)=∑i(Y−αi)−1=∑ir(αi). \chi_u'(Y)/\chi_u(Y) = \sum_i (Y - \alpha_i)^{-1} = \sum_i r(\alpha_i) .

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
