Algebra, chapter VII, § 5. Endomorphisms of vector spaces

Let r∈K(X)r \in K(X) be a rational function over K. Then uu is substitutable (IV, p. 21) in rr if and only if each of its eigenvalues is. In this case the following formulae hold:

χr(u)(X)=∏i=1n(X−r(αi)),Tr⁡(r(u))=∑i=1nr(αi),det⁡(r(u))=∏i=1nr(αi). \chi_{r(u)}(X) = \prod_{i=1}^n (X - r(\alpha_i)), \quad \operatorname{Tr}(r(u)) = \sum_{i=1}^n r(\alpha_i), \quad \det(r(u)) = \prod_{i=1}^n r(\alpha_i).

Write r=p/qr = p/q where pp and qq are coprime polynomials. Then uu is substitutable in rr if and only if det⁡(q(u))≠0\det(q(u)) \neq 0, so the first assertion follows from (8). By Cor. 1, we may suppose qq coprime to χu\chi_u, so by the Bezout identity there exist polynomials gg and hh such that qg+hχu=1qg + h\chi_u = 1. Then q(αi)g(αi)=1q(\alpha_i)g(\alpha_i) = 1 and q(u)g(u)=1q(u)g(u) = 1 by the Cayley-Hamilton theorem (III, p. 541). The stated formulae can then be obtained by applying formulae (6), (7) and (8) to p(u) g(u)=r(u)p(u)\ g(u) = r(u).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
