Topological Vector Spaces, chapter III, § 1. Bornology in a topological vector space
Let be a topological vector space. A subset of is said to be bounded if it is absorbed by every neighbourhood of in (I, p. 7, def. 4).
In order that be bounded, it is sufficient that be absorbed by every neighbourhood of a fundamental system of neighbourhoods of . Since there exists a fundamental system of balanced neighbourhoods of (I, p. 7, prop. 4), this is the same as saying that, for every neighbourhood of in , there exists such that .
Suppose the topology of is defined by a fundamental system of semi-norms (II, p. 3); then a subset of is bounded if and only if every semi-norm is bounded on .
In particular, if is a semi-normed space, a subset of is bounded if and only if it is contained in a ball. In other words, if is normed this means that is bounded for the metric space structure of (GT, IX, § 2, No. 2).
Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
