Functions of a Real Variable, chapter II, § 1. PRIMITIVES AND INTEGRALS

One says that a map ff of an interval I⊂RI \subset \mathbf{R} into a set E is a step function if there is a partition of I into a finite number of intervals JkJ_k such that ff is constant on each of the JkJ_k.

Let (ai)0≤i≤n(a_i)_{0 \leq i \leq n} be the strictly increasing sequence formed by the distinct endpoints of the JkJ_k; since the JkJ_k are pairwise disjoint each of them either reduces to a singleton aia_i or is an interval with two consecutive points ai,ai+1a_i, a_{i+1} as endpoints; moreover, since I is the union of the JkJ_k, the point a0a_0 is the left-hand endpoint, and ana_n is the right-hand endpoint of I. Every step function on I can thus be characterised as a function which is constant on each of the open intervals ]ai, ai+1[ (0≤i≤n−1)a_i,\ a_{i+1}[\ (0 \leq i \leq n - 1), where (ai)0≤i≤n(a_i)_{0 \leq i \leq n} is a strictly increasing sequence of points of II with a0a_0 being the left-hand endpoint and ana_n the right-hand endpoint of II.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
