Functions of a Real Variable, chapter II, § 1. PRIMITIVES AND INTEGRALS

The set of step functions defined on II, with values in a vector space EE over R\mathbf{R}, is a vector subspace E\mathscr{E} of the vector space F(I;E)\mathscr{F}(I; E) of all maps of II into EE.

Indeed, let ff and gg be two step functions, and (Ai)(A_i) and (Bj)(B_j) two partitions of II into a finite number of intervals such that ff (resp. gg) is constant on each of the AiA_i (resp. BjB_j); whatever the real numbers λ,μ\lambda, \mu, it is clear that λf+μg\lambda f + \mu g is constant on each of the nonempty intervals Ai∩BjA_i \cap B_j, and that these intervals form a partition of II.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
