Functions of a Real Variable, chapter II, § 1. PRIMITIVES AND INTEGRALS

The vector subspace E\mathscr{E} is generated by the characteristic functions of intervals.

Now let us consider the case where EE is a normed space over R\mathbf{R}; it is then immediate that the characteristic function of an interval JJ with endpoints a,ba, b (a<ba < b) admits a primitive, namely the function equal to aa for x≤ax \leq a, to xx for a≤x≤ba \leq x \leq b, and to bb for x≥bx \geq b. The cor. to prop. 2 thus shows that every step function with values in EE admits a primitive.

We can now apply the method set out in n' 2.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
