Integration, chapter III, § 1. Measures on a locally compact space

— A continuous linear form on K(X;C)\mathscr{K}(X; \mathbf{C}), X a locally compact space, is called a measure (or complex measure) on X.

If μ\mu is a measure on a locally compact space XX, the value of the measure for a function f∈K(X;C)f \in \mathscr{K}(X; \mathbf{C}) is called the integral of f with respect to μ\mu; besides the general notations μ(f)\mu(f) and ⟨f,μ⟩\langle f, \mu \rangle, one also uses the notations ∫fdμ\int f d\mu, ∫fμ\int f \mu, ∫f(x)dμ(x)\int f(x) d\mu(x) and ∫f(x)μ(x)\int f(x) \mu(x) to denote it; as to the use of the letter xx, see S, I, §1, No. 1.

By virtue of the criterion for continuity in direct limits (TVS, Ch. II, §4, No. 4, Prop. 5), to say that μ\mu is a measure on XX means that μ\mu is a linear form on K(X;C)\mathscr{K}(X; \mathbf{C}) satisfying the following condition: for every compact subset KK of XX, there exists a number MKM_K such that, for every function f∈K(X;C)f \in \mathscr{K}(X; \mathbf{C}) whose support is contained in KK,

∣μ(f)∣≤MK⋅∥f∥(where ∥f∥=sup⁡x∈X∣f(x)∣). | \mu(f) | \leq M_K \cdot \| f \| \quad \text{(where } \| f \| = \sup_{x \in X} |f(x)| ).

More generally:

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
