Integration, IV, p. 50, § 4. Integrable functions and sets

Let Φ\Phi be a nonempty set of subsets of AA satisfying the axiom (CL). Given a finite family (Mi)1≤i≤n(M_i)_{1 \leq i \leq n} of sets in Φ\Phi, there exists a

¹ A clan Φ\Phi of subsets of a set AA is also known as a ring (or Boolean ring) of sets; if, moreover, A∈ΦA \in \Phi, then Φ\Phi is called an algebra (or Boolean algebra) of sets (cf. GT, I, §6, Exer. 20 and II, §4, Exer. 12). A Boolean algebra closed under countable unions is called a tribe, or σ\sigma-*algebra* (GT, IX, §6, No. 3, Def. 3).

finite family (Nj)1≤j≤m(N_j)_{1 \leq j \leq m} of pairwise disjoint sets in Φ\Phi such that each MiM_i is the union of a certain number of the NjN_j.

For, consider the 2n−12^n - 1 sets of the form ⋂i=1nPi\bigcap_{i=1}^n P_i, where Pi=MiP_i = M_i for certain indices ii, Pi=CMiP_i = \mathbf{C} M_i for the others, at least one of the PiP_i being equal to MiM_i. Let (Nj)1≤j≤m(N_j)_{1 \leq j \leq m} be the sequence of these sets arranged in some order; they are pairwise disjoint and belong to Φ\Phi; on the other hand, every set MkM_k is the union of the sets Nj=⋂i=1nPiN_j = \bigcap_{i=1}^n P_i corresponding to the families (Pi)(P_i) such that Pk=MkP_k = M_k, which proves the lemma.

The lemma established, every function of the form ∑i=1nciφMi\sum_{i=1}^n c_i \varphi_{M_i}, where Mi∈ΦM_i \in \Phi, may be written in the form ∑j=1mdjφNj\sum_{j=1}^m d_j \varphi_{N_j}, where the NjN_j belong to Φ\Phi and are pairwise disjoint; if φM=∑j=1mdjφNj\varphi_M = \sum_{j=1}^m d_j \varphi_{N_j} then necessarily dj=0d_j = 0 or dj=1d_j = 1 for each index jj, thus MM is the union of a certain number of the NjN_j, and therefore belongs to Φ\Phi.

Every clan Φ\Phi of subsets of AA contains the empty subset ∅\varnothing of AA; for, there exists at least one subset M∈ΦM \in \Phi, therefore M−M=∅M - M = \varnothing belongs to Φ\Phi. Note also that the set of subsets of AA consisting of the single subset ∅\varnothing is a clan.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
