Integration, IV, p. 67, § 5. Measurable functions and sets

Let ff be a measurable mapping of XX into a topological space FF; the inverse image under ff of every closed (resp. open) set in FF is measurable.

It suffices to carry out the proof for the inverse image −1f(A)^{-1}f(A) of a closed set AA in FF. Let KK be a compact subset of XX; there exist a negligible set N⊂KN \subset K and a partition (Kn)(K_n) of K−NK - N formed of compact sets such that the restriction of ff to each KnK_n is continuous. The intersection Kn∩−1f(A)K_n \cap ^{-1}f(A) is thus the inverse image of the closed set AA under the restriction of ff to KnK_n; it is therefore a closed set in KnK_n, hence is compact. The set K∩−1f(A)K \cap ^{-1}f(A) is therefore the union of the negligible set N∩−1f(A)N \cap ^{-1}f(A) and the compact sets Kn∩−1f(A)K_n \cap ^{-1}f(A), which proves that −1f(A)^{-1}f(A) is measurable.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
