Integration, chapter IV, § 6. Convexity inequalities

— 1) Let E\mathscr{E} be a dense linear subspace of LF′q\mathscr{L}_{F'}^q; then the formula (9) holds when gg runs over the intersection of E\mathscr{E} with the set BB of functions in LF′q\mathscr{L}_{F'}^q such that Nq(g)≤1N_q(g) \leq 1. For, it suffices to observe that the interior B∘\overset{\circ}{B} of BB is dense in BB and that B∘∩E\overset{\circ}{B} \cap \mathscr{E} is dense in B∘\overset{\circ}{B}, since B∘\overset{\circ}{B} is open. This remark applies in particular to the set E=K(X;F′)\mathscr{E} = \mathscr{K}(X; F') of continuous functions with compact support (with values in F′F') when 1≤q<+∞1 \leq q < +\infty, that is, 1<p≤+∞1 < p \leq +\infty. But in this case, the formula (9) is true as gg runs over B∩K(X;F′)B \cap \mathscr{K}(X; F'), even for p=1p = 1. For, we may, as above, restrict ourselves to the case that ff is a step function. We saw then that if N1(f)=1N_1(f) = 1, then for every ε>0\varepsilon > 0 there exists a step function g∈LF′∞g \in \mathscr{L}_{F'}^\infty such that ∣g(x)∣≤1|g(x)| \leq 1 for all x∈Xx \in X and ∣∫⟨f,g⟩dμ∣≥1−ε|\int \langle f, g \rangle d\mu| \geq 1 - \varepsilon. There exists a finite number of pairwise disjoint compact sets KiK_i such that gg has a constant value ai′a'_i on each KiK_i and such that, if KK is the union of the KiK_i, then ∫∣f∣φCKdμ≤ε\int |f| \varphi_{\mathscr{C}_K} d\mu \leq \varepsilon. Let UiU_i be a neighborhood of KiK_i such that the sets UiU_i are pairwise disjoint, and let hih_i be a continuous mapping of XX into [0,1][0, 1] with support contained in UiU_i and equal to 1 on KiK_i. Setting h=∑ai′hih = \sum a'_i h_i, we have h(x)=g(x)h(x) = g(x) on KK and ∣h(x)∣≤1|h(x)| \leq 1 on XX, therefore

∫∣⟨f,h⟩∣φCKdμ≤ε \int |\langle f, h \rangle| \varphi_{\mathscr{C}_K} d\mu \leq \varepsilon

and consequently ∣∫⟨f,h⟩dμ∣≥1−3ε|\int \langle f, h \rangle d\mu| \geq 1 - 3\varepsilon, which proves our assertion. Analogous remarks can be made for the formula (10).

2) Let μ\mu be a positive measure on XX, ff a measurable function ≥0\geq 0 (finite or not) whose support is contained in a countable union of compact sets KnK_n. Then, for every pp such that 1≤p≤+∞1 \leq p \leq +\infty,

(11)Np(f)=sup⁡∫∗∣fg∣dμ, (11) \quad N_p(f) = \sup \int^* |fg| d\mu,

as gg runs over the set of functions in H(X;R)\mathscr{H}(X; \mathbf{R}) such that Nq(g)≤1N_q(g) \leq 1. For, the formula (11) is a special case of (9) when Np(f)<+∞N_p(f) < +\infty, since ff is then equivalent to a function in Lp\mathscr{L}^p (§ 5, No. 6, Th. 5). If Np(f)=+∞N_p(f) = +\infty, for every integer n>0n > 0 set fn=inf⁡(n,fφKn)f_n = \inf(n, f \varphi_{K_n}). Then

Np(fn)=sup⁡∫∗∣fng∣dμ≤sup⁡∫∗∣fg∣dμ, N_p(f_n) = \sup \int^* |f_n g| d\mu \leq \sup \int^* |f g| d\mu,

whence, on passing to the limit (assuming, as we may, that the sequence (Kn)(K_n) is increasing), we have sup⁡∫∗∣fg∣dμ=+∞\sup \int^* |f g| d\mu = +\infty (§ 1, No. 3, Th. 3).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
