Integration, chapter IV, § 7. Barycenters

If uu is strictly convex on KK, then u(x)<u‾(x)u(x) < \overline{u}(x) for every non-extremal point xx of KK.

For, there then exist two distinct points y,zy, z of KK such that x=(y+z)/2x = (y + z)/2, whence u(x)<(u(y)+u(z))/2u(x) < (u(y) + u(z))/2 since uu is strictly convex. If ff is an affine linear function on EE, then f(x)=(f(y)+f(z))/2f(x) = (f(y) + f(z))/2; applying this relation to the continuous affine linear functions ff that are ≥u\geq u on KK, we obtain

u‾(x)≥(u‾(y)+u‾(z))/2≥(u(y)+u(z))/2>u(x). \overline{u}(x) \geq (\overline{u}(y) + \overline{u}(z))/2 \geq (u(y) + u(z))/2 > u(x) .

These lemmas established, we therefore (Lemma 1) have (a,u‾(a))∈S(a, \overline{u}(a)) \in S for all a∈Ka \in K. Since GG is compact, being the image of KK under the continuous mapping x↦(x,u(x))x \mapsto (x, u(x)), there exists, by Prop. 1 of No. 1, a positive measure ν\nu on GG, of total mass 1 , having (a,u‾(a))(a, \overline{u}(a)) as barycenter. Since the restriction of the projection pr1pr_1 to GG is a homeomorphism of GG onto KK, the measure ν\nu may be transported by means of this homeomorphism, which yields a measure μ\mu on KK (positive and of total mass 1 ) such that

(6)

a=∫x dμ(x)andu‾(a)=∫u(x) dμ(x). a = \int x \, d\mu(x) \quad \text{and} \quad \overline{u}(a) = \int u(x) \, d\mu(x) .

The first of the relations (6) means that aa is the barycenter of μ\mu. The function u‾\overline{u} is upper semi-continuous and bounded on KK, hence is μ\mu-integrable (§4, No. 4, Cor. 1 of Prop. 5); moreover, since the function −u‾-\overline{u} is by definition convex, we have, by the Cor. of Prop. 2 of No. 1,

(7)

u‾(a)≥∫u‾(x) dμ(x), \overline{u}(a) \geq \int \overline{u}(x) \, d\mu(x) ,

whence, on comparing with the second of the formulas (6),

∫u(x) dμ(x)≥∫u‾(x) dμ(x). \int u(\mathbf{x})\, d\mu(\mathbf{x}) \geq \int \overline{u}(\mathbf{x})\, d\mu(\mathbf{x}) .

But since u(x)≤u‾(x)u(\mathbf{x}) \leq \overline{u}(\mathbf{x}) on K, the relation (8) implies that u(x)=u‾(x)u(\mathbf{x}) = \overline{u}(\mathbf{x}) almost everywhere for μ\mu. Taking into account Lemma 2, one sees that Theorem 1 will be proved once the following lemma has been established:

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
