Integration, chapter IV, § 7. Barycenters
— Let be the set of points such that (the unit ball in ) and let be the set of restrictions to of the holomorphic functions, with values in , defined in a neighborhood of in (the neighborhood depending on the function considered); let be the closure of in , which is obviously a closed complex subalgebra of and separates the points of . Application of the 'maximum principle' for holomorphic functions shows that is the sphere .
In the preceding definition, let us replace by the 'polydisk' defined by the relations and , which yields subalgebras and (the closure of of . Here, the maximum principle shows that is the 'torus' defined by the relations and .
From these results, one deduces that there does not exist an analytic isomorphism of an open neighborhood of onto an open neighborhood of that transforms into ; for, if were the restriction to of such a mapping, one would have and so would transform into a space homeomorphic to , which is absurd since is simply connected but is not. One will observe, however, that the spaces and are homeomorphic, both being bounded convex sets in with nonempty interior.*
Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
