Integration, chapter V, § 5. Measures defined by numerical densities

— In order that a positive linear form θ\theta on L∞\mathscr{L}^\infty be of the type f↦∫fgdμf \mapsto \int f g d\mu, where g∈L1g \in \mathscr{L}^1, it is necessary and sufficient that, for every increasing directed family (fα)α∈A(f_\alpha)_{\alpha \in A} of positive functions in L∞\mathscr{L}^\infty whose set of classes (f˙α)α∈A(\dot{f}_\alpha)_{\alpha \in A} is bounded above in L∞L^\infty and admits h˙\dot{h} as its supremum in this space, one have

θ(h)=sup⁡α∈Aθ(fα). \theta(h) = \sup_{\alpha \in A} \theta(f_\alpha).

Let us first show that the condition is necessary. The measure h⋅μh \cdot \mu is the supremum in M(T)\mathscr{M}(T) of the set of measures fα⋅μf_\alpha \cdot \mu (No. 5, Scholium); therefore (Ch. II, §2, No. 2), for every function φ≥0\varphi \geq 0 in K(T)\mathscr{K}(T), we have ∫hφ dμ=sup⁡α∈A∫fαφ dμ\int h \varphi \, d\mu = \sup_{\alpha \in A} \int f_\alpha \varphi \, d\mu. If now aa is a number ≥0\geq 0 such that N∞(fα)≤aN_\infty(f_\alpha) \leq a for all α∈A\alpha \in A (which implies that N∞(h)≤aN_\infty(h) \leq a), then for every ε>0\varepsilon > 0 there exists a φ∈K(T)\varphi \in \mathscr{K}(T) such that φ≥0\varphi \geq 0 and N1(g−φ)≤εN_1(g - \varphi) \leq \varepsilon, from which we infer that ∫fα∣g−φ∣ dμ≤aε\int f_\alpha |g - \varphi| \, d\mu \leq a \varepsilon for all α∈A\alpha \in A, and ∫h∣g−φ∣ dμ≤aε\int h |g - \varphi| \, d\mu \leq a \varepsilon. Since sup⁡α∈A∫fαg dμ≤∫hg dμ\sup_{\alpha \in A} \int f_\alpha g \, d\mu \leq \int h g \, d\mu, this proves that the two members of this inequality are equal.

To establish that the condition is sufficient, we shall make use of the following lemma:

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
