Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter I, § 2. Enveloping algebra of a Lie algebra

Let gg be a Lie algebra over KK, TT the tensor algebra of the KK-module gg and JJ the two-sided ideal of TT generated by the tensors x⊗y−y⊗x−[x,y]x \otimes y - y \otimes x - [x, y] where x∈g,y∈gx \in g, y \in g. The associative algebra U=T/JU = T/J is called the enveloping algebra of gg. The restriction to gg of the canonical mapping of TT onto UU is called the canonical mapping of gg into UU.

Let T+T_+ be the two-sided ideal of TT consisting of the tensors whose component of order 0 is zero. Let T0=K.1T_0 = K.1 be the set of elements of TT of order 0. Let U+U_+ and U0U_0 be the canonical images of T+T_+ and T0T_0 in UU. As J⊂T+J \subset T_+, the decomposition into a direct sum T=T0+T+T = T_0 + T_+ implies a decomposition into a direct sum U=U0+U+U = U_0 + U_+. The algebra UU therefore has a unit element distinct from 0 and U0=K.1U_0 = K.1. For all x∈Ux \in U, the component of xx in U0U_0 is called the constant term of xx. The elements with constant term zero form a two-sided ideal of UU, namely the two-sided ideal U+U^+ generated by the canonical image of gg in UU.

The associative algebra UU is generated by 1 and the canonical image of gg in UU.

If x∈gx \in g and y∈gy \in g, x⊗y−y⊗xx \otimes y - y \otimes x and [x,y][x, y] are congruent in TT modulo JJ; hence, if σ0\sigma_0 denotes the canonical mapping of gg into UU,

σ0(x)σ0(y)−σ0(y)σ0(x)=σ0([x,y]) \sigma_0(x)\sigma_0(y) - \sigma_0(y)\sigma_0(x) = \sigma_0([x, y])

in UU. In other words, σ0\sigma_0 is an α\alpha-mapping of gg into UU.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
