Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter I, § 3. Representations

Let gg be a Lie algebra over KK and MiM_i a gg-module (1≤i≤n+11 \leq i \leq n + 1). Let NN be the KK-module LK(M1,…,Mn;Mn+1)\mathscr{L}_K(M_1, \ldots, M_n; M_{n+1}) of multilinear mappings of ∏i=1nMi\prod_{i=1}^n M_i into Mn+1M_{n+1}. There exists one and only one gg-module structure on NN such that

(xN⋅u)(m1,…,mn)=−∑i=1nu(m1,…,xMi⋅mi,…,mn) (x_N \cdot u)(m_1, \ldots, m_n) = - \sum_{i=1}^n u(m_1, \ldots, x_{M_i} \cdot m_i, \ldots, m_n)
+xMn+1⋅u(m1,…,mn) + x_{M_{n+1}} \cdot u(m_1, \ldots, m_n)

for all x∈g,u∈Nx \in g, u \in N and mi∈Mim_i \in M_i (1≤i≤n1 \leq i \leq n).

In particular, let gg be a Lie algebra over KK and MM a gg-module and consider KK as a trivial gg-module. Proposition 3 defines a gg-module structure on LK(M,K)=M∗\mathscr{L}_K(M, K) = M^*. The corresponding representation is called the dual representation of the representation x↦xMx \mapsto x_M. We have:

(xM∗⋅f)(m)=−f(xM⋅m) (x_{M^*} \cdot f)(m) = -f(x_M \cdot m)

for all x∈g,f∈M∗,m∈Mx \in g, f \in M^*, m \in M. In other words:

xM∗=−txM. x_{M^*} = -{}^t x_M.

When KK is a field and MM is finite-dimensional, the gg-module MM is simple (resp. semi-simple) if and only if the gg-module M∗M^* is simple (resp. semi-simple).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
