Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter II, § 2. Free Lie algebras

A Hall set relative to XX is any totally ordered subset HH of M(X)M(X) satisfying the following conditions: (A) If u∈H,v∈Hu \in H, v \in H and l(u)<l(v)l(u) < l(v), then u<vu < v. (B) X⊂HX \subset H and H∩M2(X)H \cap M^2(X) consists of the products xyxy with x,yx, y in XX and x<yx < y. (C) An element ww of M(X)M(X) of length ⩾3\geqslant 3 belongs to HH if and only if it is of the form a(bc)a(bc) with a,b,ca, b, c in HH, bc∈Hbc \in H, b⩽a<bcb \leqslant a < bc and b<cb < c.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
