Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter II, § 2. Free Lie algebras

There exists a Hall set relative to XX.

We shall construct by induction on the integer nn sets Hn⊂Mn(X)H_n \subset M^n(X) and a total ordering on these sets: (a) We write H1=XH_1 = X and give it a total ordering. (b) The set H2H_2 consists of the products xyxy with x,yx, y in XX and x<yx < y. We give it a total ordering. (c) Let n⩾3n \geqslant 3 be such that the totally ordered sets H1,…,Hn−1H_1, \ldots, H_{n-1} are already defined. The set Hn−1′=H1∪⋯∪Hn−1H'_{n-1} = H_1 \cup \cdots \cup H_{n-1} has a total ordering which induces the given relations on H1,…,Hn−1H_1, \ldots, H_{n-1} and is such that w<w′w < w' if l(w)<l(w′)l(w) < l(w'). We define HnH_n to be the set of products a(bc)∈Mn(X)a(bc) \in M^n(X) with a,b,ca, b, c in Hn−1′H'_{n-1} satisfying the relations bc∈Hn−1′bc \in H'_{n-1}, b⩽a<bcb \leqslant a < bc, b<cb < c and give HnH_n a total ordering.

We write H=⋃n⩾1HnH = \bigcup_{n \geqslant 1} H_n; we give HH the total ordering defined thus: w⩽w′w \leqslant w' if and only if l(w)<l(w′)l(w) < l(w') or l(w)=l(w′)=nl(w) = l(w') = n and w⩽w′w \leqslant w' in the set HnH_n. It is immediate that HH is a Hall set relative to XX.

For every subset S of X, we identify the free magma M(S) with its canonical image in M(X).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
