Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter II, § 3. Enveloping algebra of the free Lie algebra

Suppose that K is a field of characteristic zero and let Q be the projector of A(X)=U(L(X))A(X) = U(L(X)) onto L(X)L(X) associated with the canonical graduation of U(L(X))U(L(X)), cf. § 1, no. 5. For α∈N(X)\alpha \in \mathbf{N}^{(X)}, Q(Aα(X))⊂Lα(X)Q(A^\alpha(X)) \subset L^\alpha(X). For it suffices to verify that the image and the kernel of Q are graded submodules of A(X)A(X) with the graduation of type N(X)\mathbf{N}^{(X)}. This is obvious for the image, which is equal to L(X)L(X). On the other hand, let nn be an integer ≥1\geq 1. The vector subspace of A(X)A(X) generated by the yny^n, where y∈L(X)y \in L(X), is equal to the vector subspace of A(X)A(X) generated by the ∑σ∈Snyσ(1)yσ(2)⋯yσ(n)\sum_{\sigma \in S_n} y_{\sigma(1)} y_{\sigma(2)} \cdots y_{\sigma(n)}, where y1,y2,…,yny_1, y_2, \ldots, y_n are homogeneous elements of L(X)L(X); then this subspace is a graded submodule of A(X)A(X).

(Note that, if Card(X) ≥2\geq 2, the projectors P and Q do not coincide on A+(X)A^+(X). For let x,yx, y be in X with x≠yx \neq y and write

z=x[x,y]+[x,y]x=x2y−yx2. z = x[x, y] + [x, y]x = x^2y - yx^2.

Then Q(z)=0Q(z) = 0 and P(z)=13[x,[x,y]]≠0P(z) = \frac{1}{3}[x, [x, y]] \neq 0, cf. § 2, no. 10, Example and no. 11, Theorem 1.)

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
