Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter III, § 3. Passage from a Lie group to its Lie algebra

*Suppose that K is of characteristic ≠2\neq 2. Let E be a finite-dimensional vector space over K and ϕ\phi a non-degenerate symmetric (resp. alternating) bilinear form on E. For all u∈L(E)u \in \mathscr{L}(E), let u∗u^* be the adjoint of u relative to ϕ\phi. Let G be the orthogonal (resp. symplectic) group of ϕ\phi. Then G is a Lie subgroup of GL(E)\mathbf{GL}(E) and L(G)L(G) is the set of x∈L(E)x \in \mathscr{L}(E) such that x∗=−xx^* = -x.

We apply Proposition 37 with A=L(E)A = \mathscr{L}(E) and xt=x∗x^t = x^*.*

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
