Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter III, § 6. Real and complex Lie groups

Let G be a finite-dimensional connected Lie group and H a normal connected Lie subgroup of G. The canonical morphism of π1(H)\pi_1(H) into π1(G)\pi_1(G) is injective.

Let G1G_1 be the universal covering of G and λ\lambda the canonical mapping of G1G_1 onto G. The Lie algebra of G1G_1 is identified with L(G)L(G). The Lie subgroup λ−1(H)\lambda^{-1}(H) of G1G_1 is normal in G1G_1 and its Lie algebra is L(H)L(H). Let H1H_1 be the identity component of λ−1(H)\lambda^{-1}(H) and λ1=λ∣H1\lambda_1 = \lambda | H_1. Then L(H1)=L(H)L(H_1) = L(H) and hence λ1\lambda_1 is an étale morphism of H1H_1 onto H. On the other hand, H1H_1 is simply connected (Corollary 2) and hence is identified with the universal covering of H. Then, by General Topology, Chapter XI, the canonical morphism of π1(H)\pi_1(H) into π1(G)\pi_1(G) is identified with the canonical injection of Ker λ1\lambda_1 into Ker λ\lambda.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
