Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter III, § 9. Commutators, centralizers and normalizers in a Lie group

Let VV be a complex vector space of finite dimension >0> 0 and GG a connected solvable subgroup of GL(V)\mathbf{GL}(V). (i) There exists a non-zero element vv of VV such that gv∈Cvgv \in Cv for all g∈Gg \in G. (ii) There exists a basis BB of VV such that, for all g∈Gg \in G, the matrix of gg with respect to BB is lower triangular. Let V1V_1 be a minimal element among the non-zero vector subspaces of VV which are stable under GG. By Proposition 22 (ii), dim⁡V1=1\dim V_1 = 1. This proves (i). By induction on dim⁡V\dim V, it then follows that there exists an increasing sequence (V1,V2,…,Vn)(V_1, V_2, \ldots, V_n) of vector subspaces of VV which are stable under GG such that dim⁡Vi+1/Vi=1\dim V_{i+1}/V_i = 1 for i<ni < n and Vn=VV_n = V; hence (ii).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
