Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter III, § 9. Commutators, centralizers and normalizers in a Lie group

Let G be a connected topological group, Z its centre and Z′Z' a discrete subgroup of Z. Then the centre of G/Z′G/Z' is Z/Z′Z/Z'. Let y be an element of G whose class modulo Z′Z' is a central element of

G/Z'. Let ϕ\phi be the mapping g↦gyg−1y−1g \mapsto gyg^{-1}y^{-1} of G into G. Then ϕ(G)\phi(G) is connected and contained in Z′Z' and hence ϕ(G)=ϕ({e})={e}\phi(G) = \phi(\{e\}) = \{e\}. Therefore y∈Zy \in Z.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
