Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter VI, § 1. Root systems

(i) *Let XX be a subset of R\mathbf{R}, let VXV_X be the vector subspace of VV generated by XX, and let VX′V'_X be the vector subspace of V∗V^* generated by the α−\alpha^-, where α∈X\alpha \in X. Then VV is the direct sum of VXV_X and the orthogonal complement of VX′V'_X; V∗V^* is the direct sum of VX′V'_X and the orthogonal complement of VXV_X, and VX′V'_X is identified with the dual of VXV_X.

(ii) R∩VXR \cap V_X is a root system in VXV_X, and the canonical bijection from R∩VXR \cap V_X to its inverse root system is identified with the restriction of the map α↦α−\alpha \mapsto \alpha^- to R∩VXR \cap V_X.

By Remark 2, we can assume that k=Rk = \mathbf{R}. Identify VV with V∗V^* by means of the symmetric bilinear form of Prop. 3. We have α−=2α(α∣α)\alpha^- = \frac{2\alpha}{(\alpha|\alpha)} for all α∈R\alpha \in R (Lemma 2). Every vector subspace of VV is non-isotropic, and the proposition is now clear.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
