Let α,β be two non-proportional roots such that β+α is a root. Let p,q be the integers in Prop. 9. Then
(β∣β)(β+α∣β+α)=pq+1.
Let S be the α-chain defined by β,γ its origin; its length l is ≥1 since β+α is a root. The following cases are possible:
1) l=1; then β=γ,q=0,p=1,(β+α∣β+α)=(β∣β). 2) l=2,β=γ; then q=0,p=2,(β+α∣β+α)=21(β∣β). 3) l=2,β=γ+α; then q=1,p=1,(β+α∣β+α)=2(β∣β).
4) l=3,β=γ; then q=0,p=3,(β+α∣β+α)=31(β∣β). 5) l=3,β=γ+α; then q=1,p=2,(β+α∣β+α)=(β∣β). 6) l=3,β=γ+2α; then q=2,p=1,(β+α∣β+α)=3(β∣β).
In each case, the formula to be proved is satisfied.
Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
