General Topology, chapter I, § 2. Continuous functions
Let be a set, a family of subsets of . Suppose each carries a topology such that, for each pair of indices : 1) is open (resp. closed) in each of the topologies . 2) The topologies induced on by and coincide. Let be the finest topology on for which the injections are continuous. Then, for each , is open (resp. closed) in in the topology , and the topology induced by on coincides with .
In view of Proposition 6 and its corollary, it is enough to show that for each and each subset of the following statements are equivalent: (i) is open (resp. closed) in the topology . (ii) For each , is open (resp. closed) in the topology .
It is clear that (ii) implies (i) by taking . Conversely, if (i) is satisfied, then is open (resp. closed) in for the topology induced on by ; but is also the topology induced on by ; hence is also the intersection of with a subset of which is open (resp. closed) in the topology ; since is open (resp. closed) in , so is . This completes the proof.
We remark that if the union of the is different from , then the topology induced by on is discrete. For if belongs to none of the , then is open in each topology and therefore is open in the topology .
Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
