General Topology, chapter IV, § 5. Real-valued functions

*Let (fi)i∈I(f_i)_{i \in I} be a family of real-valued functions defined on a set XX. The real-valued function on XX whose value at each point x∈Xx \in X is sup⁡i∈I(fi(x))\sup_{i \in I} (f_i(x)) [resp. inf⁡i∈I(fi(x))\inf_{i \in I} (f_i(x))] is called the upper (resp. lower) envelope of the family (fi)(f_i), and is denoted by sup⁡i∈Ifi\sup_{i \in I} f_i or sup⁡ifi\sup_i f_i (resp. inf⁡i∈Ifi\inf_{i \in I} f_i or inf⁡ifi\inf_i f_i).

The upper envelope of the family (fi)(f_i) is thus the least upper bound of this family in the lattice R‾\overline{\mathbf{R}} of real-valued functions defined on XX, and this justifies the notation sup⁡i∈Ifi\sup_{i \in I} f_i.

Furthermore, if we endow R‾X\overline{\mathbf{R}}^X with the topology which is the product of the topologies of its factors (all identical with R‾\overline{\mathbf{R}}), we have the following proposition:

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
