General Topology, chapter V, § 2. Measurement of magnitudes

Every mapping gg of II into R+\mathbf{R}_+ which satisfies the same conditions as ff is of the form x→λf(x)x \to \lambda f(x) where λ>0\lambda > 0. For if λ=g(a)>0\lambda = g(a) > 0, the relations zp≤x≤zp+1,zq≤a≤zq+1z^p \leq x \leq z^{p+1}, z^q \leq a \leq z^{q+1} imply, by hypothesis,

pg(z)≤g(x)≤(p+1)g(z),qg(z)≤g(a)≤(q+1)g(z), pg(z) \leq g(x) \leq (p+1)g(z), \qquad qg(z) \leq g(a) \leq (q+1)g(z),
whence
λ(x:z)(q:z)+1≤g(x)≤λ(x:z)+1(q:z), \lambda \frac{(x : z)}{(q : z) + 1} \leq g(x) \leq \lambda \frac{(x : z) + 1}{(q : z)},
and therefore, passing to the limit with respect to x~\tilde{x}, we have g(x)=λf(x)g(x) = \lambda f(x).

Let us seek conditions under which f(I)f(I) is an interval of R+\mathbf{R}_+. Clearly the following two conditions are necessary:

(GR_{IIIa}) The set of elements >ω> \omega in II is not empty and has no smallest element, and given any two elements x,yx, y, of II such that x<yx < y, there exists z∈Iz \in I such that xz=yxz = y ("subtraction" of magnitudes).

(GR_{IVa}) Every increasing sequence of elements of II, which is bounded above by an element of II has a least upper bound in II.

We shall show that these conditions are also sufficient, and moreover that they allow us to dispense with axiom (GR_{IV}) (Archimedes' axiom). To be precise, we shall prove the following proposition:

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
