General Topology, chapter VIII, § 1. Complex numbers, quaternions

The field R[X]/(X2+1)\mathbf{R}[X]/(X^2 + 1) is called the field of complex numbers and is denoted by C\mathbf{C}. The canonical image of XX in C\mathbf{C} is denoted by ii, so that C\mathbf{C} is obtained from the field R\mathbf{R} by algebraic adjunction of the root ii of the polynomial X2+1X^2 + 1. The elements of C\mathbf{C} are called complex numbers.

From an algebraic point of view the importance of the field C\mathbf{C} is due to the following fundamental theorem:

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
