General Topology, chapter X, § 4. Approximation of continuous real-valued functions

Let XX be a locally compact space and let C0(X)C_0(X) be the normed C\mathbf{C}-algebra of continuous mappings of XX into C\mathbf{C} which tend to 0 at infinity. Let AA be a subalgebra of C0(X)C_0(X) which separates the points of XX and is such that (i) f‾∈A\overline{f} \in A whenever f∈Af \in A, (ii) for each x∈Xx \in X, there is an f∈Af \in A such that f(x)≠0f(x) \neq 0. Then AA is dense in C0(X)C_0(X).

If X′X' is the compact space obtained by adjoining a point at infinity ω\omega to XX, then C0(X)C_0(X) can be identified with the subspace of C(X;C)C(X; \mathbf{C}) consisting of continuous mappings which vanish at ω\omega, the norm on C0(X)C_0(X) being defined by

∥f∥=sup⁡x∈X∣f(x)∣=sup⁡x∈X∣f(x)∣. \|f\| = \sup_{x \in X} |f(x)| = \sup_{x \in X} |f(x)|.

By virtue of Proposition 7, every f∈C0(X)f \in C_0(X) can be uniformly approximated by polynomials with complex coefficients in the functions belonging to AA; moreover, since f(ω)=0f(\omega) = 0, the argument of no. 2, Proposition 4 shows that we may suppose these polynomials to have no constant term, and then they belong to AA.

Another application of Proposition 7 is the following:

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
