Commutative Algebra, chapter VIII, § 1. Dimension de Krull d’un anneau

Let XX be a topological space. Then dim⁡(X)=sup⁡x∈Xdim⁡x(X)\dim(X) = \sup_{x \in X} \dim_x(X).

In fact, by definition one has dim⁡(X)≥dim⁡x(X)\dim(X) \geq \dim_x(X) for every x∈Xx \in X. On the other hand, if Z0⊂...⊂ZnZ_0 \subset ... \subset Z_n is a chain of irreducible closed subsets of XX, for every x∈Z0x \in Z_0 and every open neighbourhood UU of xx, the sets Z0∩U,...,Zn∩UZ_0 \cap U, ..., Z_n \cap U form a chain of irreducible closed subsets of UU (II, § 4, No. 1, Prop. 7). Hence dim⁡x(X)≥n\dim_x(X) \geq n, whence dim⁡(X)≤sup⁡x∈Xdim⁡x(X)\dim(X) \leq \sup_{x \in X} \dim_x(X).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
