Commutative Algebra, chapter VIII, § 1. Dimension de Krull d’un anneau

A topological space XX is said to be catenary if, for every pair (Y,Z)(Y, Z) of irreducible closed subsets of XX such that Y⊂ZY \subset Z, every saturated chain of irreducible closed subsets with extremities YY and ZZ is of length codim⁡(Y,Z)\operatorname{codim}(Y, Z).

It comes to the same thing to say that, for every pair (Y,Z)(Y, Z) of irreducible closed subsets of XX such that codim⁡(Y,Z)\operatorname{codim}(Y, Z) is finite, all saturated chains with extremities YY and ZZ have the same length, and that, for every pair (Y,Z)(Y, Z) such that codim⁡(Y,Z)=+∞\operatorname{codim}(Y, Z) = +\infty, there exists no saturated chain with extremities YY and ZZ.

Every closed subspace of a catenary space is catenary. In order that a space be catenary, it is necessary and sufficient that its irreducible components be so.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
