Commutative Algebra, chapter VIII, § 1. Dimension de Krull d’un anneau

Let XX be a topological space. In order that XX be catenary, it is necessary and sufficient that, for every triplet (Y,Z,T)(Y, Z, T) of irreducible closed subsets of XX such that Y⊂Z⊂TY \subset Z \subset T, one have:

codim⁡(Y,T)=codim⁡(Y,Z)+codim⁡(Z,T) \operatorname{codim}(Y, T) = \operatorname{codim}(Y, Z) + \operatorname{codim}(Z, T)

Suppose XX catenary. In view of Prop. 3, b), it is enough to prove the relation when codim⁡(Y,Z)\operatorname{codim}(Y, Z) and codim⁡(Z,T)\operatorname{codim}(Z, T) are finite. By joining end to end a saturated chain of irreducible closed subsets with extremities YY and ZZ, of length codim⁡(Y,Z)\operatorname{codim}(Y, Z), and a saturated chain of irreducible closed subsets with extremities ZZ and TT, of length codim⁡(Z,T)\operatorname{codim}(Z, T), one obtains a saturated chain with extremities YY and TT, of length codim⁡(Y,Z)+codim⁡(Z,T)\operatorname{codim}(Y, Z) + \operatorname{codim}(Z, T). But, since XX is catenary, this length is necessarily equal to codim⁡(Y,T)\operatorname{codim}(Y, T).

Conversely, suppose that one has codim⁡(Y,T)=codim⁡(Y,Z)+codim⁡(Z,T)\operatorname{codim}(Y, T) = \operatorname{codim}(Y, Z) + \operatorname{codim}(Z, T) for any irreducible closed subsets Y,Z,TY, Z, T of XX such that Y⊂Z⊂TY \subset Z \subset T, and let us prove that XX is catenary. To do this, let us prove by induction on the integer n≥0n \geq 0 that, for every saturated chain Z0⊂...⊂ZnZ_0 \subset ... \subset Z_n of irreducible closed subsets of XX, one has codim⁡(Z0,Zn)=n\operatorname{codim}(Z_0, Z_n) = n. If n=0n = 0, this is clear. Let n>0n > 0, and suppose the property holds for chains of length ≤n−1\leq n - 1. If Z0⊂...⊂ZnZ_0 \subset ... \subset Z_n is a saturated chain of length nn, then Z0⊂...⊂Zn−1Z_0 \subset ... \subset Z_{n-1} is a saturated chain of length n−1n - 1, hence codim⁡(Z0,Zn−1)=n−1\operatorname{codim}(Z_0, Z_{n-1}) = n - 1. In view of the assumption made on XX, one has codim⁡(Z0,Zn)=codim⁡(Z0,Zn−1)+codim⁡(Zn−1,Zn)=(n−1)+1=n\operatorname{codim}(Z_0, Z_n) = \operatorname{codim}(Z_0, Z_{n-1}) + \operatorname{codim}(Z_{n-1}, Z_n) = (n - 1) + 1 = n.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
