Commutative Algebra, chapter VIII, § 1. Dimension de Krull d’un anneau

Let AA be a ring. One has

dim⁡(A[X])⩾dim⁡(A)+1. \dim(A[X]) \geqslant \dim(A) + 1 .
In fact, if p0⊂...⊂pnp_0 \subset ... \subset p_n is a chain of prime ideals of AA, of length nn, one obtains a chain p0′⊂...⊂pn+1′p'_0 \subset ... \subset p'_{n+1} of prime ideals of A[X]A[X], of length n+1n + 1, by putting pi′=piA[X]p'_i = p_i A[X] for 0≤i≤n0 \leq i \leq n, and pn+1′=pnA[X]+XA[X]p'_{n+1} = p_n A[X] + XA[X].

By the same reasoning, one proves the inequality dim⁡(A[[X]])⩾dim⁡(A)+1\dim(A[[X]]) \geqslant \dim(A) + 1. One deduces by induction the inequalities

dim⁡(A[X1,...,Xn])⩾dim⁡(A)+n, \dim(A[X_1, ..., X_n]) \geqslant \dim(A) + n ,
dim⁡(A[[X1,...,Xn]])⩾dim⁡(A)+n. \dim(A[[X_1, ..., X_n]]) \geqslant \dim(A) + n .

We shall prove later (§ 3, No. 4, cor. 3 to prop. 7 and cor. 3 to prop. 8) that one has equality in the two preceding formulae when AA is noetherian.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
