Commutative Algebra, chapter VIII, § 3. Dimension des anneaux noethériens

Let AA be a noetherian ring, mm a positive integer and aa an ideal contained in the radical of AA and generated by mm elements. One has

dim⁡(A/a)≤dim⁡(A)≤dim⁡(A/a)+m. \dim(A/a) \leq \dim(A) \leq \dim(A/a) + m .

The inequality dim⁡(A/a)≤dim⁡(A)\dim(A/a) \leq \dim(A) follows from prop. 6 of § 1, no 3. An immediate induction on mm shows that it is enough to establish the inequality

dim⁡(A)≤dim⁡(A/xA)+1 \dim(A) \leq \dim(A/xA) + 1

for every element xx of the radical of AA, that is to say, to prove that one has dim⁡(A/xA)≥n−1\dim(A/xA) \geq n - 1 for every chain p0⊂...⊂pnp_0 \subset ... \subset p_n of prime ideals of AA, of length n⩾1n \geqslant 1, and such that x∈pnx \in p_n. It suffices to construct a chain q1⊂...⊂qnq_1 \subset ... \subset q_n of prime ideals of AA, with x∈q1x \in q_1 and this follows from the following lemma:

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
