Commutative Algebra, chapter VIII, § 3. Dimension des anneaux noethériens

Let AA be a noetherian local ring, MM a nonzero finitely generated AA-module and SS a subset of the maximal ideal mAm_A of AA. One says that SS is secant for MM if one has

(9)

dim⁡A(M)=Card(S)+dim⁡A(M/SM). \dim_A(M) = \mathrm{Card}(S) + \dim_A(M/SM) .

If SS is secant for MM, one has Card(S)≤dim⁡A(M)\mathrm{Card}(S) \leq \dim_A(M), hence SS is finite. One says that a family (xi)i∈I(x_i)_{i \in I} of elements of mAm_A is secant for MM if one has

(10)

dim⁡A(M)=Card(I)+dim⁡A(M/∑i∈IxiM), \dim_A(M) = \mathrm{Card}(I) + \dim_A(M/\sum_{i \in I} x_i M) ,
that is to say if i↦xii \mapsto x_i is a bijection of II onto a secant subset of mAm_A for MM.

An element x of mAm_A is said to be secant for M if {x}\{ x \} is a secant subset for M, that is to say if one has

dim⁡A(M/xM)=dim⁡A(M)−1. \dim_A(M/xM) = \dim_A(M) - 1 .

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
