Commutative Algebra, chapter VIII, § 3. Dimension des anneaux noethériens

Let AA be a noetherian local ring, MM a nonzero finite AA-module and SS a subset of the maximal ideal mAm_A of AA.

a) If M/SMM/SM is of finite length, one has Card(S)⩾dim⁡A(M)\mathrm{Card}(S) \geqslant \dim_A(M); if SS is secant for MM, one has Card(S)⩽dim⁡A(M)\mathrm{Card}(S) \leqslant \dim_A(M).

b) Every secant subset for MM is contained in a maximal secant subset for MM.

c) The following properties are equivalent: (i) SS is a maximal secant subset for MM; (ii) SS is a secant subset for MM and Card(S)=dim⁡A(M)\mathrm{Card}(S) = \dim_A(M); (iii) M/SMM/SM is of finite length and Card(S)=dim⁡A(M)\mathrm{Card}(S) = \dim_A(M); (iv) SS is a secant subset for MM and M/SMM/SM is of finite length.

Since one has S⊂mAS \subset m_A, Nakayama's lemma shows that one has M/SM≠{0}M/SM \neq \{0\}, whence dim⁡A(M/SM)⩾0\dim_A(M/SM) \geqslant 0 with equality if and only if M/SMM/SM is of finite length. Assertion a) then results from formulas (8) and (9), as well as the equivalence of properties (ii), (iii) and (iv).

Assertion b) results from the fact that the cardinal of every subset of mAm_A secant for MM is bounded above by the integer dim⁡A(M)\dim_A(M).

By a), every secant subset for MM, of cardinal equal to dim⁡A(M)\dim_A(M), is maximal. It remains to prove that, if SS is secant for MM and if Card(S)<dim⁡A(M)\mathrm{Card}(S) < \dim_A(M), then SS is not maximal. Let aa be the annihilator of MM, and BB the noetherian local ring A/(a+SA)A/(a + SA). By cor. 2 of prop. 2 of No. 1, there exists an element xx of mAm_A such that dim⁡(B/xB)=dim⁡(B)−1\dim(B/xB) = \dim(B) - 1 whence x∉Sx \notin S. By remark 2, the subset S∪{x}S \cup \{x\} of mAm_A is secant for A/aA/a, hence for MM by remark 1.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
