Let ρ:A→B be a local homomorphism of noetherian local rings, M a finitely generated A-module and N a finitely generated B-module. Put B=B⊗AκA=B/ρ(mA).B and N=N⊗BB=N/ρ(mA).N. One has
dimB(M⊗AN)≤dimA(M)+dimB(N),
and there is equality if N is flat over A.
One may suppose M and N non-zero. By the corollary of th. 1 (no. 2), there exists a subset S (resp. T) of mA (resp. mB) such that Card(S)=dimA(M) (resp. Card(T)=dimB(N)) and that M/SM is an A-module of finite length (resp. N/TN is a B-module of finite length). One has ρ(S)⊂mB. Let E be the B-module M⊗AN; the B-module E/(ρ(S).E+T.E) is isomorphic to M/SM⊗AN/TN, hence is of finite length: by props. 18 and 19 of II, § 4, no. 4, one has
Supp(M/SM⊗AN/TN)=Supp(N/TN)∩aρ−1(Supp(M/SM))=Supp(N/TN)∩aρ−1(Supp(κA))=Supp(N/TN⊗AκA)=Supp(N/TN)={mB}.
It follows, by th. 1, that one has the inequality
dimB(E)≤Card(S)+Card(T)=dimA(M)+dimB(N).
Now suppose N flat over A, and let us show that there is equality in formula (12). Let a (resp. b) be the annihilator of M (resp. N). By props. 18 and 19 of II, § 4, no. 4, one has
Supp(E)=Supp(N)∩aρ−1(Supp(M))=V(b)∩aρ−1(V(a))=V(b+ρ(a).B).
Hence
dimB(M⊗AN)=dim(B/(b+ρ(a).B))
and also
dimA(M)+dimB(N)=dim(A/a)+dim(B/(b+ρ(mA).B)).
dim(B′)≥dim(A′)+dim(B′/ρ′(mA′).B′)
and since the ring B′/ρ′(mA′).B′ is isomorphic to B/(b+ρ(mA).B), our assertion follows from formulas (13), (14) and (15).
Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
