Commutative Algebra, chapter VIII, § 3. Dimension des anneaux noethériens

Let ρ:A→B\rho : A \to B be a local homomorphism of noetherian local rings.

a) One has

dim⁡(B)≤dim⁡(A)+dim⁡(B⊗AκA) \dim(B) \leq \dim(A) + \dim(B \otimes_A \kappa_A)

with equality if ρ\rho makes BB into a flat AA-module.

b) Suppose that ρ\rho makes BB into a flat AA-module, and let SS be a subset of mA\mathfrak{m}_A. Then SS is secant for AA if and only if ρ(S)\rho(S) is secant for BB.

Assertion a) is the particular case M=A,N=BM = A, N = B of Prop. 7. Let us prove b). Under the hypotheses made, we have

dim⁡(B)=dim⁡(A)+dim⁡(B‾) \dim(B) = \dim(A) + \dim(\overline{B})

with B‾=B⊗AκA=B/ρ(mA).B\overline{B} = B \otimes_A \kappa_A = B/\rho(\mathfrak{m}_A).B. Since ρ\rho is injective (I, § 3, No. 5, Prop. 9), we have

Card(ρ(S))=Card(S). \mathrm{Card}(\rho(S)) = \mathrm{Card}(S).

Finally B′=B/ρ(S).BB' = B/\rho(S).B is a flat module over A′=A/SAA' = A/SA, whence

dim⁡(B/ρ(S).B)=dim⁡(A/SA)+dim⁡(B‾) \dim(B/\rho(S).B) = \dim(A/SA) + \dim(\overline{B})

since B′/ρ(mA′).B′B'/\rho(\mathfrak{m}_{A'}).B' is isomorphic to B‾\overline{B}. Our assertion follows at once from formulas (17), (18) and (19).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
