Commutative Algebra, chapter VIII, § 3. Dimension des anneaux noethériens

Let ρ:A→B\rho : A \to B be a homomorphism of noetherian rings, and aa an ideal of AA. We have the inequality

ht(ρ(a).B)⩽ht(a) \text{ht}(\rho(a).B) \leqslant \text{ht}(a)

if the map aρ:Spec(B)→Spec(A)^a\rho : \mathrm{Spec}(B) \to \mathrm{Spec}(A) is surjective. If BB is a faithfully flat AA-module, we have ht(ρ(a).B)=ht(a)\text{ht}(\rho(a).B) = \text{ht}(a).

If BB is faithfully flat over AA, then aρ^a\rho is surjective (II, §2§ 2, No. 5, Cor. 4 to Prop. 11) and we have ht(a)⩽ht(ρ(a).B)\text{ht}(a) \leqslant \text{ht}(\rho(a).B) (§2§ 2, No. 1, corollary of Prop. 2).

It remains therefore to prove inequality (20) under the assumption that aρ^a\rho is surjective. Let pp be a prime ideal of AA such that a⊂pa \subset p and ht(a)=ht(p)\text{ht}(a) = \text{ht}(p) (§1§ 1, no 3, prop. 7). Put B‾=B⊗Aκ(p)\overline{B} = B \otimes_A \kappa(p) and denote by hh the canonical homomorphism of BB into B‾\overline{B}. If X=aρ−1(p)X = {}^a\rho^{-1}(p) is the nonempty set of prime ideals of BB lying over pp, it is known (§2§ 2, no 1, lemme 1) that the mapping ah^ah is a homeomorphism of Spec(B‾)\mathrm{Spec}(\overline{B}) onto the subspace XX of Spec(B)\mathrm{Spec}(B). Let qq be the image under ah^ah of a minimal prime ideal of B‾\overline{B}; one has dim⁡(Bq⊗Aκ(p))=0\dim(B_q \otimes_A \kappa(p)) = 0 and Cor. 1 yields the inequality dim⁡(Bq)⩽dim⁡(Ap)=ht(p)=ht(a)\dim(B_q) \leqslant \dim(A_p) = \text{ht}(p) = \text{ht}(a), finally

ht(ρ(a).B)⩽ht(q)=dim⁡(Bq)⩽dim⁡(Ap)=ht(p)=ht(a), \text{ht}(\rho(a).B) \leqslant \text{ht}(q) = \dim(B_q) \leqslant \dim(A_p) = \text{ht}(p) = \text{ht}(a),

whence the corollary.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
